KeybedHarmony began as a simple web experiment to display diagrams of keyboards that are easy to re-size and print on paper. I wanted an easy way of providing a paper reference for learners who do not read music. Previously I had manually created diagrams using graphics software. It could be quite a time consuming task, particularly when optimising for efficient sizing as well as longer chord progressions.
As KeybedHarmony grew, I had further ideas that I felt were worth developing. From rendering staves alongside the diagrams, playing the sounds and also generating chord progressions from a scale. I soon realised that it would be extremely useful for generating all kinds of different progressions and harmonisations. From creating diatonic harmonisation using strict voice-leading, harmonising scales as well as transposing progressions to other key signatures are all useful propositions.
While I think it is crucial to already have some understanding of the basic rules regarding good technique, I have personally found that it has really helped me. Using the transpose function and the harmonisation generators I can quickly develop ergonomic intuition and a strengthened sense of muscle memory in a given key signature.
